El caso del Famoso diseñador francés, Yves Saint Laurent, y su relación con Marrakech es bastante singular.
YSL viajó por primera vez a Marrakech en 1966 y desde entonces convertiría a la ciudad en su segunda residencia. Allí pasaba, junto a su pareja Pierre Bergé, buena parte de los meses de invierno. Tuvo varias propiedades, entre las cuales destaca, sin lugar a dudas, La Majorelle, famosa por su color azul eléctrico y su espectacular jardín.
La pareja ha sido una pieza fundamental en el posicionamiento de Marrakech en el mapa del turismo mundial. En especial, la tolerancia que la sociedad, las autoridades, y en especial el Rey Mohamed VI, les han proferido, han ayudado a mostrarla como una ciudad abierta y tolerante frente a los extranjeros.
Como ya vimos, la situación de los ciudadanos marroquís es completamente diferente.
The case of the famous French designer, Yves Saint Laurent, and his relationship with Marrakech is quite unique.
YSL first traveled to Marrakech in 1966 and since then he would make the city its second residence. There he spent, with his partner Pierre Bergé, most of the winter months. He had several properties, among which and without a doubt on of the most outstanding, La Majorelle, famous for its electric blue color and its spectacular garden.
The couple had been a fundamental piece in positioning Marrakech on the world tourism map. In particular, the tolerance that society, the authorities, and especially King Mohamed VI, have given them, have helped to show it as an open and tolerant city to foreigners.
Even though, the situation of Moroccan citizens is completely different.
SITUACIÓN DEL COLECTIVO GAY EN MARRUECOS / GAY RIGHTS IN MOROCCO
En Marruecos, la actividad homosexual es ilegal y las relaciones sexuales entre personas del mismo sexo se castigan con hasta tres años de prisión. Según el Informe de Procuraduría de 2018, en 2017 fueron perseguidas por su condición de homosexual 197 personas en Marruecos.[i]
Dicho esto, la situación real del colectivo gay en Marruecos debe de diferenciarse entre viajeros extranjeros y ciudadanos marroquís.
Para estos últimos, la cuestión es muy diferente que para los visitantes extranjeros, pues por su condición son perseguidos, tanto por las autoridades, como por la sociedad en general.
En cambio, para los turistas extranjeros hay mucha tolerancia de parte de las autoridades, siempre y cuando no haya ninguna denuncia de por medio. Es una especie de “hacer la vista gorda” para no perjudicar la industria del turismo. En los casos en donde hay una denuncia interpuesta, casi siempre son por causa de un comportamiento en público, o por propietarios o empleados de hoteles que no aceptan abiertamente al colectivo.
En 2016, un ciudadano español fue arrestado y procesado después de que una empleada de limpieza del alojamiento en el que se hospedaba con otro hombre los delatara. Si bien el ciudadano español solo pasó unos pocos días detenido, su caso sirve como un recordatorio para quienes decidan viajar al país.
Las ciudades de Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez y Essaouira, son bastante frecuentadas por turistas gay. Marrakech, en particular, se destaca por su tolerancia entre las demás. Es la ciudad que enamoró el diseñador Yves Saint Laurent (abiertamente gay). Lo enamoró de tal forma que la convirtió en su ciudad de residencia y hasta está enterrado allí. Es muy común ver espectáculos de transformistas en la Plaza Jamae El Fna: Gogós Drag Queen en Pasha Marrakech o chicos prostituyéndose en los callejones de la antigua medina y subiendo con sus clientes a las habitaciones de los hoteles.

In Morocco, homosexual activity is illegal and same-sex sex is punishable by up to three years in prison. According to the 2018 Prosecutor’s Report, 197 people in Morocco were persecuted for their homosexual status in 2017. [i]
That said, the real situation of the gay group in Morocco must be differentiated between foreign travelers and Moroccan citizens.
For them, the issue is very different than for foreign visitors, because they are persecuted because of their orientation, both by the authorities and by society in general.
On the other hand, for foreign tourists there is a lot of tolerance from the authorities, as long as there is no complaint involved. It is a kind of “turn a blind eye” so as not to harm the tourism industry. In cases where there is a complaint filed, they are almost always due to public behavior, or by hotel owners or employees that do not openly accept the collective.
In 2016, a Spanish citizen was arrested and prosecuted after an employee cleaning the accommodation where he was staying with another guy accused them. Although the Spanish citizen only spent a few days in detention, his case serves as a reminder for those who decide to travel to the country.
The cities of Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez and Essaouira, are quite frequented by gay tourists. Marrakech, in particular, stands out for its tolerance among others. It is the city that designer Yves Saint Laurent fell in love with (openly gay). He fell in love in such a way that it became his city of residence and he is even buried there. It is very common to see shows in the Jamae El Fna Square: Gogós Drag Queen in Pasha Marrakech or boys prostituting themselves in the alleys of the old medina and going up with their clients to the hotel rooms.
